1000 Hasen is a completed long-term art project comprising a total of 1,000 original works, created between 2007 and 2014.

The European hare has accompanied Tina Oelker since childhood and became the central figure of her artistic work. Over time, a unique relationship between artist and motif developed. The hare became a constant companion throughout her artistic journey, unfolding through paintings, drawings, films and publications.

From 2010 to 2015, the „Hare Manufactory“ @ HAFENTOR 7 in Hamburg was the public home of 1000 Hasen, a studio, exhibition space and place of encounter accompanying the project throughout its development.

Artist Statement

„If anyone wonders why the hunt, what the whole thing is about, what intention drives this pursuit to capture a hare or even another piece of game, nothing will be revealed here. Only in the image and in the repeated encounter does the recognition of the self gradually unfold. One kills, breaks open, cooks and devours it, another simply orders and swallows it, suspecting only faintly after long habit what it might be. But only the one who grasps the essence at its core recognizes – and if it is the hare – what it truly is. This path is not everyone’s taste. Therefore, it still seems meaningful to me – and yes, the shoemaker sticks to his last. I have created 1000 – hares indeed – and each one knows what it means to be hunted. Now I wish every lady and gentleman a merry hunt and say: I know what I hunt for; whoever needs proof may ask.“
